Christmas traditions in England - Tradycje Bożonarodzeniowe w Anglii

To start with, Christmas in Great Britain lasts two days – December 25th and 26th. They are called Christmas Day and Boxing Day. This holiday dates back to medieval ages. Nevertheless, the original way of celebrating has been lost throughout the ages and the contemporary way originates from the times of Queen Victoria – second half of nineteenth century.

On December 24th British people decorate their Christmas Trees. This tradition was brought from Germany by king's George III's wife, Queen Charlotte. It has begun over 200 years ago in the royal court and since 150 years it is present in every British home. Since 1947 Norway has been sending a giant tree to Britain to decorate the Trafalgar Square, to memorise their cooperation with Britain during the World War II. Besides the Christmas Tree, English people tend to decorate their houses with bunches of holly. They believe that this helps to stay protected against nasty elves. It is also a symbol of Christ's crown of thorns.
