Winter in Poland begins on 22nd December. It is the coldest season  of the whole year. After autumn, the days are colder and shorter. The sun shines weakly and even the colour of the sky is cold blue. Everything around is gloomy and grey. The bare trees, the lack of green grass, mud and puddles, all of this makes the world look sad. People don’t like to go outside because of the bad weather. The temperature is low, strong and icy wind blows very often. Almost every morning, everything outside is covered with frost. In December usually snows. It protects the plants from freezing. Winter is the time when some animals hibernate. To survive the winter these animals use fat stores, which they accumulated during the summer and early autumn. Wild animals which don’t hibernate also use their fat reserve, but they also eat seeds, roots and plants which they find under the snow. However, it is a difficult time for animals and during very cold and long winters people must help them, by feeding them, to survive.

Winter is not an easy time for people either. People spend less time outside and the lack of sunlight sometimes makes them feel depressed. It is also the season of flues and colds. Moreover you have to dress warmly and remember about wearing the jacket when you go outside. You also have to heat the house.  However,  this time of the year is the only opportunity to practice winter sports. When the temperature drops below zero degrees and the water freezes, you can go ice skating. When the snow falls in the mountains, you can also go skiing. For children it is a great time to play outside, in the snow. They throw snowballs, make snowmen, toboggan.

The last  days of winter are warmer. The snow melts, the birds begin to return home. The weather is still chilly, but the air is fresh and you can feel spring coming. Wintertime ends on 21st March.

I think winter can be a pleasant season. Although I don’t like the cold weather, I enjoy ice skating, sitting by the fireside, looking through the window at the trees covered with frost. I like when the first snow falls. The world looks magically covered with the pure white snow. I think it is also the best time to observe the sky. The nights are very dark and you can see the stars very clearly. I think that winter can be a merry time.

Zima w Polsce zaczyna się 22. grudnia. To najzimniejsza pora w ciągu całego roku. Po jesieni dni są zimniejsze i krótsze. Słońce świeci słabiej i nawet niebo ma zimny kolor. Wszystko dookoła jest ponure i szare. Nagie drzewa, brak zielonej trawy, błoto i kałuże, wszystko to sprawia, że świat wygląda smutno. Przez to, że jest brzydka pogoda, ludzie nie chcą wychodzić na dwór. Temperatura jest niska, często wieje silny, mroźny wiatr. Prawie każdego ranka wszystko na dworze pokryte jest szronem. W grudniu przeważnie pada śnieg. Chroni on rośliny przed zamarznięciem. Zima to czas, kiedy niektóre zwierzęta śpią zimowym snem. Żeby przetrwać zimę, zwierzęta te korzystają z zapasów tłuszczu, który nagromadziły latem i wczesną jesienią. Dzikie zwierzęta, które nie zimują, także korzystają z zapasów tłuszczu, ale również żywią się nasionami, korzeniami i roślinami, które znajdują pod śniegiem. To jednak trudny czas dla zwierząt i podczas bardzo mroźnych i długich zim ludzie muszą pomóc im przetrwać, dokarmiając je.

Zima to niełatwy czas także dla ludzi. Ludzie spędzają mniej czasu na dworze i brak promieni słonecznych powoduje, że czasami czują się przygnębieni. To także okres grypy i przeziębień. Ponadto trzeba ubierać się ciepło i pamiętać o noszeniu kurtki, kiedy wychodzi się na dwór. Trzeba także ogrzewać mieszkanie. Jednak to jedyny czas w ciągu roku, kiedy istnieje możliwość uprawiania zimowych sportów (w naturalnych warunkach). Kiedy temperatura spada poniżej zera stopni i woda zamarza, można jeździć na łyżwach. Kiedy spadnie śnieg w górach, można jeździć na nartach. Dla dzieci to świetny czas na zabawę na dworze, w śniegu. Rzucają się śnieżkami, lepią bałwany, jeżdżą na sankach.

Ostatnie dni zimy są coraz cieplejsze. Śnieg topnieje, ptaki zaczynają wracać do domu. Pogoda jest nadal zimna, ale powietrze jest świeże i czuć nadchodzącą wiosnę. Zima kończy się 21. marca.

Myślę, że zima może być przyjemną porą roku. Chociaż nie lubię zimnej pogody, lubię jeździć na łyżwach, siedzieć przy kominku, patrzeć przez okno na drzewa pokryte szronem. Lubię, kiedy spadnie pierwszy śnieg. Świat wygląda magicznie, przykryty nieskazitelnie białym śniegiem. Myślę, że jest to także najlepszy czas na to, by obserwować niebo. Noce są bardzo ciemne i gwiazdy są dobrze widoczne. Biorąc to wszystko pod uwagę, myślę, że zima może być przyjemnym czasem.
