'Landscape with the Fall of Icarus' is an oil painting created in the 16th century. It was probably painted by a Netherlandish Renaissance artist – Pieter Bruegel the Elder.

The painting shows a beautiful rural landscape. In the foreground we can see a peasant plowing a field. The plow is pulled by a brown horse. The peasant is wearing a red shirt. He is holding a whip in his left hand. A little bit further, below the field, we can see a shepherd leaning on a stick. He is looking up to the sky. There is a big, brown dog sitting next to him. There is a flock of sheep around the shepherd. In the lower right corner of the painting we can see a fisherman. He is throwing his nets into the see.

In the background there is the sea. There are several ships sailing upon blue water. On the seashore, on the left side, we can see rocks, trees and a small seaside town. On the horizon one can notice mountains and the setting sun. The sun prettily lightens up the sky, the sea and the rocks. 

The scene seems to be full of peace and harmony. However in the lower right corner of the picture we can see something that disturbs the peace – legs of a human who fell into the water. There are feathers flying around in the air. The man who fell into the water is the title character, Icarus. 

The painting shows the indifference of other people to a human tragedy. The peasant is working in the field as if nothing has happened. Also the shepherd and the fisherman are busy with their own tasks. There is no place for help, concern or even pity. Icar symbolizes the fragility of human aspirations.

I chose this picture to describe for two reasons. Firstly, I think it is an exquisite painting. I like the idyllic scenery – the green and blue colours of the painting highlight the beauty of nature. The painting is also full of interesting details. These details – for example, the fisherman, the dog, or the small houses in the background – attract attention. Secondly, I think that this painting carries an important message, it is very easy to ignore human misery.

„Upadek Ikara” to olejny obraz, który powstał w XVI wieku. To najprawdopodobniej obraz niderlandzkiego artysty – Pietera Bruegela starszego.

Obraz przedstawia piękny, wiejski krajobraz. Na pierwszym planie widzimy chłopa orzącego pole. Pług ciągnie kasztanowy koń. Chłop ubrany jest w czerwoną koszulę. W swojej lewej ręce trzyma bat. Trochę dalej, poniżej pola, widzimy pasterza opartego o laskę. Patrzy w niebo. Obok niego siedzi duży, brązowy pies. Wokół pasterza znajduje się stado owiec. W lewym, dolnym rogu obrazu widzimy rybaka. Rybak zarzuca swoje sieci do morza.

W tle znajduje się morze. Jest kilka statków pływających po niebieskiej wodzie. Na brzegu, po lewej stronie, widzimy skały, drzewa i małe nadmorskie miasteczko. Na horyzoncie widzimy góry, a także zachodzące słońce. Słońce pięknie rozświetla niebo, morze i skały.

Widok wydaje się być pełen ładu i harmonii. Jednak w lewym dolnym rogu obrazu, widzimy coś, co zakłóca ten spokój – nogi człowieka, który wpadł do wody. Dookoła unoszą się pióra. Ten człowiek, który wpadł do wody to tytułowy Ikar.

Obraz pokazuje obojętność innych na ludzką tragedię. Chłop pracuje w polu, jakby nic się nie stało. Także pasterz i rybak są zajęci własnymi sprawami. Nie ma tu miejsca na pomoc, troskę czy nawet litość. Ikar symbolizuje kruchość ludzkich dążeń.

Wybrałam ten obraz, by go opisać z dwóch powodów. Po pierwsze, myślę że to przepiękny obraz. Podoba mi się idylliczny krajobraz – zielone i niebieskie barwy obrazu podkreślają piękno natury. Obraz jest też pełen ciekawych detali. Te detale – np. rybak, pies, małe domki w tle – przyciągają uwagę. Po drugie, myślę, że obraz ten niesie bardzo ważne przesłanie, mianowicie – bardzo łatwo jest ignorować ludzkie nieszczęście.
